Temples - a 3D digital exploration

I am fascinated by the architecture of sacred spaces - the sense of space and calm that they encapsulate. This temple project is ongoing and was begun in 1998 - the pictures here are the most recent additions to the work from 1999 and 2000. Over the past few years I have gained a better grasp of the technology that I am using and a greater understanding of three dimensional space as shown on the computer screen. I have also expanded the project to include some (unfinished) virtual worlds, which will eventually appear on these pages.

The initial conception started with a sculpture I built based around the Christian cross imposed onto a Pagan Temple. At each of the 6 points that were created I placed various objects for contemplation. After I had done this I decided that I should see whether I could use the computer to produce something similar - to do this I had to learn 3D-modelling on the PC. I became engrossed with the shapes and forms created by overlapping forms and the conceptions of creating things that would be physically possible in the ìrealî world. The spaces are meant to look exotic and unusual - their purpose is to create a space for contemplation.

Travelling around London in a taxi I am amazed at the contrast between the ages and textures of buildings. They speak of generations of toil and human need to build something better than our forefathers created. Architecture, from the ancient Greeks to the Lloyds building in the city of London has always fascinated me. I love walking around any building and seeing how it was put together and how it has changed over time.

My plans for the future of this series of works include building more 3D models, this time in real space, and producing some abstract paintings from the prints. I believe that I can use the layering style of many of my paintings to reveal and hide ideas for contemplation - a bit like the archaeology of ancient sites where one building has been constructed over another and added generation after generation as needs change. I would also like to construct and interactive 3D piece (when my finances allow) which will allow the viewer to explore the virtual world by touching objects in the real world.
